Uganda, unlike various other destinations across the globe, is known for many things, yet her islands lay very much unexplored. The country is estimated to have over ninety islands, yet only about ten are explored for tourism purposes.
Below are six must-visit islands in Uganda that you should be adding to your bucket list if you haven’t visited.
- NGAMBA ISLAND
Ngamba islands is one of the most favored island-destinations in Uganda. The island, popular for being a habitat or conservatory for chimpanzees, is open to tourists nearly all year round. Opportunities to volunteer at the island are also very much available, where volunteers or voluntourists commit a certain fee and amount of time at the island, taking care of these interesting primates in their habitat.
Ngamba island is also popularly known as ‘Chimp-Island’, as it is a sanctuary to over fifty Chimpanzees. Overall, the island is estimated to sit on about 100 acres of land, 98 of which are a rain-forest.
- SSESE ISLAND
The Ssese Islands is an archipelago of over eighty islands northwest of Lake Victoria. The islands consist of clear waters, tropical rain forests and white sandy beaches. The islands are also home to various primate species such as the vervet and colobus monkeys, antelopes, various fish species and birds.
- DOLWE ISLAND
Only quite recently coming to the public eye, Dolwe island has for many years been Uganda’s unrevealed jewel. Popularized by the recent ‘Bantu Migration’ movement, the island is stunning for its white sandy beaches, clear waters and gigantic rocks with inscriptions of ancient migrant tribes.
Note
Since Dolwe island has only recently been explored and brought to the public attention, the island has little to no accommodation, and travelers are advised to go with their camping materials to make their adventures more comfortable. Investors are also encouraged to explore the wealth of opportunities on the island.
- LAKE BUNYONYI ISLANDS
Located on Lake Bunyonyi in South western Uganda, the islands on Bunyonyi include; Itambara, Akabucuanuka, Bwama, Bushara, and Akampene. Akampene is popularly referred to as ‘Punishment Island’, as it was a banishment island for Bakiga girls who were involved in premarital sex. Having been considered a disgrace, these girls would be left off at the island on their own, to starve to death or face any other brutal deaths. Bwama, on the other hand, is the largest of the islands on Bunyonyi, and is open to normal explorations. It is also a community for people with disabilities.
- BUGALA ISLAND
Part of the Kalangala archipelago on the Ssese Islands, Bugala Island, also known as the crown jewel and most beautiful island in Uganda, is located northwest of Lake Victoria. The island has pristine beaches, breathtaking lush greenery and landscapes. The island is perfect for picturesque, safari vacations, water games and sports including boat excursions, kayaking, paddle-boarding, to mention but a few. - BUKASA ISLAND
The second largest on Lake Victoria, Bukasa island is majorly forested with various species of primates and birds.
